Repairs

Polymer glue

Adhesives based on polymers are gaining more and more popularity. A wide range of such adhesives allows the consumer to make the right choice. Universal polymer glue is used in any economic field. Often they are used in the repair of shoes. Each house probably has such an adhesive tube. The most common type is PVA, Dragon and the well-known Moment. Let's find out what polymer glue is used for.

Polymer adhesives are divided into three types:

  1. Water-soluble adhesive mixtures based on either water or aqueous dispersions. Such adhesives are soluble in water, for example:
  • PVA - at the base of the polyvinyl acetate dispersion,
  • Bustilate, which includes latex, thickener, chalk, CMC, water and other components,

  1. Organic solvent soluble adhesives, for example:
  • Nitroclay - a mixture of nitrocellulose with acetone and amyl acetate,
  • Rubber - a mixture of dissolved rubber in gasoline,
  • Perchlorovinyl,
  1. Epoxy, polyurethane and urea - formaldehyde adhesive.

Application

In construction work, as a rule, the first and third types of adhesive mixtures are used. Water-soluble adhesives are especially often used in interior applications. For outdoor works, on the contrary, adhesives with hardening resins are used. For example, for gluing a room with wallpaper, glues based on cellulose ether and methyl are used. For tiles or glass use epoxy mixtures.

The adhesive tenacity depends on the correct combination of materials and compliance with the instructions for use. Particular attention should be paid to the preparation of adhesive surfaces, to observe the modes under which the composition hardens:

  • Time frame,
  • Temperature condition
  • Pressure.

Composition

Polymer adhesives should be:

  1. Tenacious
  2. Elastic
  3. Non-combustible
  4. Conductive
  5. Heat conductive.

To the glue was not combustible, antimony oxide or other additives are added to its composition. For thermal conductivity, boron nitride is added to the composition. The technology of mixing additives is strictly adhered to, otherwise the mixture will lose its adhesion.

  • We are used to the fact that adhesives are sold in liquid, ready-to-use conditions. But they are also sold in powder form. Such a powder is diluted with special solvents,

  • You can also find granular glue. To bring it into working condition, the granules are heated at low temperatures,
  • There is a glue in the form of films with and without a closed adhesive part.

Polymer adhesives are constantly being improved; increased interest in them is justified by its use in the construction of rocket launchers. And a mixture with many properties is extremely important.

Rules

When applying polymer glue in a house, for example, “Dragon” or “Moment”, you should know a few simple rules:

  • The surface to be glued must be cleaned and degreased thoroughly,
  • The parts that need to be glued after applying the adhesive mixture must be pressed, and in this condition, withstand the time specified in the instructions,
  • Polymer adhesives are mostly toxic, it is necessary to follow safety precautions and wear respiratory dressings.

Universal

Universal polymer glue is available in two packages, usually sold in a tube or bucket. Pay attention to the features of the work that needs to be done. There is a universal composition that perfectly glues tiles and linoleum, but the skin will be too tough for him. To date, toxic substances are not included in the composition of polymer glue, but precautions should be taken. If glue gets on the skin or on mucous membranes, immediately rinse with plenty of water.

As a rule, polymer-based glue is frost and water resistant, in addition, it does not break when bent.

When using glue for polymer clay, it is necessary to degrease the surface, apply the mixture with a thin layer, then press the parts to be glued together. And to withstand ten to fifteen minutes, this is the optimal period of time for all types of adhesive mixtures, although it is better to withstand several hours.

There are adhesive mixtures that need to be applied in several stages, first one layer is applied, the time is held, and then the second layer and then glued. In any case, before starting work, it is necessary to carefully study the instructions, since different manufacturers use different mixtures and, accordingly, the technology for their use will be different.

In our dynamic time, there are a huge number of types of such glue. Many of them are produced at domestic chemical concerns, while others come from leading foreign manufacturers. Both those and others go through a strict selection of quality. Today, you can buy polymer glue in any store, or on the Internet.

What is polymer glue and where is it used?

The main areas of use of polymer glue are construction installation and various household repairs. This product is presented in the form of a plastic mass, which includes polymer and substances with a fixing effect.

The main advantage of polymer glue is a high level of adhesion - adhesion of surfaces. Of the shortcomings, only one can be distinguished - the high toxicity of the material. Therefore, in the course of work with this substance it is necessary to use protective equipment.

Most of the adhesives for stone and tile cladding are polymer-mineral composites, which are made of a cement-sand mixture and various polymer additives.

The more requests for decoration, the more complex the formulation of the polymers that are part of the adhesives. Of course, the more polymers added to the glue, the more the main characteristics of the glue change.

For example, polymers of the same type can only increase the ability of an adhesive to retain water, since if there are no elements in the adhesive that hold water, then water will penetrate the base. As a result, the cement will begin to “crumble”. A type of polymer may be added that increases the ability of the material to adhere (i.e., adhesion). There are additives that can improve the elasticity of the glue.

Due to this characteristic, glue can be a kind of “substrate” - a shock absorber located between the base and the tile. This property consists in the fact that when tension or deformation appears in the tile or base, the adhesive can "extinguish" it.

Thanks to the use of polymer additives, dry or liquid, the adhesives improve their characteristics, they become waterproof, elastic, durable and very strong. Such adhesives are applied in a thin layer. The thickness of the adhesive is determined by the size of the tile. It can vary from 2 to 15 mm.

When the glue is applied by the thin layer method, it dries equally on the entire surface. Of course, when applying glue with a thin-layer method, the characteristics and surface that will be finished must correspond.

Types of polymer glue.

There are several varieties of this substance:

1. Glue for carrying out various internal works.

In this case, glue can be used during interior decoration. For example, when laying parquet, drywall. In this case, a mandatory factor is the lack of constantly high humidity. You should also avoid getting on the glue various chemicals that can damage the material.

2. Glue to perform the outer cladding.

This type can be attributed to the use of material in the arrangement of facades. With its help, it is possible to lay mosaics, various materials made of ceramics. Also, the material is suitable for fixing insulation boards. This type of glue stands out among others due to its high resistance to negative environmental influences. Also does not respond to an increase or decrease in temperature.

3. Universal glue.

Glue of this type is used by masters in the course of performing both external and internal works. The main advantage of this type of material is excellent value for money. Universal adhesive, like the previous types, is resistant to the external environment.

4. Glue for installation work.

This type is used during such works as building chips, fixing fairly large facade elements. Also suitable for gluing heavy materials. Glue does not give in to negative environmental influences - high humidity, corrosive chemicals, shock and heavy loads.

5. "Liquid nails."

This type is considered to be an excellent option for working with drywall boards, various surfaces of metal, glass and ceramics. In this glue, synthetic rubber is included. It is thanks to this substance that is part of the glue that hardens quickly enough.

6. “Cold welding”.

This type of substance is well suited for work with clay, plastic, glass and wood. This type of glue can be used to connect parts of a broken object.

What is polymer glue?

The main purpose of polymer adhesives is the field of construction and repair work. Such products are presented in the form of plastic masses, which include polymers, as well as special fixing substances.

The advantage of polymer adhesive bases is a high level of adhesion and extremely fast setting of surfaces. The only negative can be considered relative toxicity. Therefore, when working with such substances, it is recommended to resort to the use of personal protective equipment.

Main types

Currently, there are several varieties of polymer glue:

  • For internal work. Such polymer glue is used for interior decoration, in particular, laying parquet, mounting tiles, plasterboard panels. A prerequisite for using this framework is the absence of a stably high level of humidity and exposure to aggressive chemicals on the surface.
  • For exterior cladding. It is used in the arrangement of building facades. Suitable for laying mosaics, ceramic materials, fixing insulation boards. Such a polymer adhesive is resistant to weathering, high and low temperatures.
  • Universal - suitable for use in all indoor and outdoor applications. The main advantage is the optimal balance between cost and quality of surface bonding.
  • Mounting adhesive is used to build chips, glue weighty materials, and to fix the overall elements of building facades. It is widely used not only in industry, but also in everyday life. The main advantage of mounting polymer foundations is increased resistance to external influences: high humidity, chemicals, vibration, shock loads, surface pressure.
  • “Liquid nails” - this polymer glue looks like an ideal solution for joining drywall boards, metal surfaces, glass, ceramics and plastic. Due to the presence of synthetic rubber in the composition, the substance hardens extremely quickly. Products of this kind have acquired their name, since for precise bonding of surfaces, the point application of the substance is sufficient.
  • “Cold welding” - glue for polymer clay, glass, plastic, wood and metal. It is used in cases when it is necessary to discreetly connect broken parts of products.

Surface preparation for gluing

It is recommended to apply polymer glue on carefully cleaned, even surfaces. Otherwise, the consumption of the substance per unit area will increase significantly. Moreover, the cladding can be glued poorly if the composition is applied to the surface with an uneven layer.

When performing work in conditions of high humidity, the base on which the materials will be glued must be primed. Thanks to this procedure, a film is formed on the surface that will absorb water from the adhesive base, connecting the structural elements more reliably.

Application features

Most varieties of polymer glue tend to harden quickly. The period during which a substance prepared for work can be stored in a container is called its “lifetime”. In most cases, the parameter is indicated on the product packaging.

When using polymer glue, one should take into account the fact that when the product completely hardens in a container, you should not try to dilute it with water again. In this case, the substance may partially lose its original characteristics, so gluing cannot be called quality.

Polymer adhesives are stored at a temperature not lower than 5 and not higher than 25 C⁰. At the same time, the packaging should be out of direct sunlight. In order to avoid fires, glue should be placed away from heating devices.

Performance of work

Polymer adhesives are applied to dry surfaces with a thin, uniform layer. When connecting plasterboard or expanded polystyrene plates, the substance is superimposed with a dotted line. Surfaces are tightly joined in 3-5 minutes after putting glue. The time of reliable setting of polymer bases is on average about 30–40 minutes.

Manufacturer

It is recommended to select polymer glue for tiles and work with other materials, focusing on the manufacturer. Not only price depends on the brand of products, but also its quality and, as a result, the reliability of the connection of surfaces.

If we talk about the products of the middle price segment, then here we can distinguish mainly domestic brands: “Moment” adhesive polymer, Litokol, Master, Artelit, Front. At the same time, polymer adhesives of such brands as Ceresit, Polimin, Knauf, Thomsit, Anserglob enjoy the greatest authority on the market.

Regardless of the choice of the manufacturer, it is important to adhere to the technology of bonding surfaces. In this case, almost any polymer adhesive is able to prove itself as a highly effective agent.

Water resistance

One of the advantages of such adhesives is that they are water resistant. Therefore, after application, a durable joint remains on the treated surface, which does not absorb moisture. Due to their water resistance, mixtures are often used for outdoor repairs. For example, they can be used to fix thermal insulation sheets for insulation from polystyrene or polystyrene.

Environmental friendliness

It is very important that the adhesive used is environmentally friendly. Mixtures made on the basis of polymers are considered completely safe, since they do not contain toxic components. Such mixtures are made of antimony oxide, which prevents ignition of the glue line.

To give the tool thermal conductivity, a little nitride boron is added to it.

Heat resistance

High-quality adhesive mixtures made of polymers are resistant to temperature extremes. After drying, the adhesive applied to the surface withstands temperatures from minus fifty to one hundred and eighty degrees above zero. Such resistance to temperature changes allows the use of adhesive mixtures on the street, even in winter.

Versatility

Another important advantage of adhesive mixtures is their versatility, due to which such agents can be used for bonding various materials. Polymer compositions are used when working with products that are made of wood, ceramic, plastic, plastic, glass and even metal.

Electrical conductivity

Such compositions for bonding various materials have high electrical conductivity. Electrical conductivity is ensured due to the fact that the composition contains a lot of metal particles. Also, in the manufacture of products, special electrically conductive powders are used, among which graphite, palladium and silver can be distinguished.

Resistance to fire

Many bonding agents have a serious drawback, which is associated with their tendency to ignite. However, mixtures made from polymers are resistant to combustion.

They do not start to burn under the influence of high temperatures due to the fact that special components are added to them that prevent this process.

Reliability

One of the main advantages of adhesive products is their high reliability. The bonded materials are joined together so firmly that it will be impossible to separate them even by heating the adhesive joint. On average, bonding strength is maintained for ten years. After this, the seam begins to stick up.

Quick drying

Polymer-based adhesives differ from most other agents in their speed of drying. After application, the seam dries completely within an hour. However, if the liquid was applied to a damp surface or under conditions of low temperature, the pour point increases one and a half times.

For interior work

Some tools are used only for internal work. Such mixtures have the following advantages:

  • environmental friendliness
  • water resistance,
  • ease of use
  • reliability.

However, they are not resistant to temperature changes and therefore they cannot be used when conducting outdoor work.

For external work

Some people have to deal with the arrangement of the facades of residential buildings. To do this, use polymer compositions that are suitable for external work. Often they are used to fix insulating sheets, ceramic products or mosaics.

Among the advantages of glue distinguish its resistance to low temperature and high humidity.

Universal mixtures

Universal waterproof glue is used when conducting external and internal works. It contains components that increase the frost resistance of the products and make them resistant to high humidity. The advantages include a balance between product quality and its value.

Mounting solutions

Sometimes it is necessary to use special mounting solutions. They are used for bonding heavy products, fixing facade parts or building chips. Such solutions are used not only in various industrial fields, but also in everyday life. The advantages of mounting tools include resistance to vibration, mechanical damage and exposure to chemicals.

Liquid Nails

Liquid nails are called polymer adhesive, which is suitable for gluing plastic, ceramics, glass, iron surfaces, as well as gypsum boards. Synthetic rubber is present in the composition of liquid nails, due to which the product seizes faster. The solution is very reliable, since insignificant spot application is enough for fixing materials.

Installation of a parquet board

Polymer-based adhesives are used in the installation process of parquet boards, which are often laid on the surface of concrete screeds. When installing parquet, glue must be applied at an air temperature of about 20-25 degrees. In this case, air humidity should be at least sixty percent. Only under such conditions, the boards are firmly fixed on the concrete surface.

Facing various surfaces

Often, cladding works are carried out outside the house, during which polymer glue is used. With it, decorative stones, plasterboard panels, tiles, wood boards and even metal cladding sheets can be fixed to the surface of the walls. To work with such materials it is better to use universal mixtures.

Drywall Mounting

Some people think that gypsum plasterboards should only be mounted on a metal frame, but this is not the case. Sometimes it is better to install them directly on the surface of the wall, without using an additional frame. In this case, a universal adhesive made of polymers is used to fix the sheets.

Minor repairs of furniture and household items

Often people encounter minor damage to household items or furniture. Sometimes it is impossible to repair them, however, there are cases when it is enough to glue a broken object. To repair furniture with household items, you need to use adhesive solutions designed for internal work.

Creating and fixing decor elements

Polymer adhesive mixtures are often used to attach facade decoration elements. For attaching decorative elements, compositions of a universal type are used, which are resistant to high air humidity and temperature extremes.

Hercules Siberia

This company specializes in the production of high quality dry mixes from which liquid glue is made. Hercules-Siberia produces universal adhesives that are resistant to low temperature and high humidity.

Application Instructions

Before using polymeric agents, you should read the instructions for their use. The product is applied to a previously prepared surface. It is cleaned of garbage, washed and degreased. This is done so that the glue adheres more securely to the surface. If the adhesive is applied in conditions of high humidity, then the coating will have to be primed additionally.

Work Precautions

When working with glue, the following precautions should be observed:

  • work must be carried out with protective gloves,
  • the working room is periodically ventilated so that it does not have an unpleasant odor,
  • if the adhesive solution has got on the surface of the skin, it must immediately be washed off with heated water.

Additional tips and tricks

Before using the glue, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations and tips for its use:

  • before applying the surface is carefully inspected and checked for contamination,
  • if necessary, clean it,
  • glue should be applied evenly, with a thin layer,
  • after application, it is left to harden for 5-15 minutes.
